Welcome Liam Jonathan Klein!!!

Sam and I are so very happy to welcome our son, Liam, into our family and lives. Liam was born on February 20, 2011, at 1.20am. He weighs 7lbs 12oz and is 20.5" long. Labor was smooth- totaling 5.5 hours from the minute my water broke and first contraction began until we had our angel in our arms. We couldn't be happier!

Thank you for all the love and support. Here's a taste of our prince!

Baby Klein at 38 Weeks

Our baby has really plumped up. He weighs about 6.8 pounds and he's over 19 1/2 inches long (like a leek). He has a firm grasp, which we'll soon be able to test when we hold his hand for the first time! His organs have matured and are ready for life outside the womb.

If he's born with brown eyes, they'll likely stay brown. If he's born with steel gray or dark blue eyes, they may stay gray or blue or turn green, hazel, or brown by the time he's 9 months old. That's because a child's irises (the colored part of the eye) may gain more pigment in the months after he's born, but they usually won't get "lighter" or more blue. (Green, hazel, and brown eyes have more pigment than gray or blue eyes.)

Progress

Oh boy, oh boy, OH BOY. We are 37.5 weeks along, but we are measuring at 41cms. That's HUGE. In fact, it's so huge, that we have an ultrasound appointment set for next week to see if we are having, as Sam hopes (for some crazy reason), a 10-pounder. Other than that my weight is fine (175lbs) and Baby Boy Klein is still cooking and is quite comfortable in my belly. We heard his heartbeat and Dr. H was overall happy. It was a quick in 'n' out appointment.

My mom is arriving tomorrow from Israel, and I'm SO excited about it! I can't wait to see her again and can't wait to hear and see her reaction to my massive belly! As far as I'm concerned, Baby Boy Klein is more than welcome to make his appearance at any point after tomorrow, and hopefully, at around 7lbs... :o)

Baby Klein at 37 Weeks- Full Term!

Our baby is now considered "full term," even though my due date is three weeks away. If I go into labor now, his lungs will likely be mature enough to fully adjust to life outside the womb. Our baby weighs about 6 1/3 pounds and measures a bit over 19 inches, head to heel (like a stalk of Swiss chard). Many babies have a full head of hair at birth, with locks from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches long. Of course, some babies sport only peach fuzz.

Progress

Today's appointment with Dr. Hakcmeyer was essentially the "Delivery-Need-To-Know" talk. We discussed vaginal delivery vs. c-section as well as contractions and what to look out for. Because I still measure big (39cms instead of 36cms), on our next appointment, 2.14.2011, we will have an ultrasound to measure Baby Boy Klein in order to get a better idea of his size. If Baby Boy Klein reaches the 10lbs, we will probably opt for a c-section (recommended by Dr. H), as it will be better for both me and our little bundle of joy. Per Dr. H, our weight is, for a change, "perfect", with a total of 35lbs gained so far. Finally, our GBS test results came back negative. Woo-hoo! We are ready to rock 'n' roll.

Baby Klein at 36 Weeks

Our baby is still packing on the pounds — at the rate of about an ounce a day. He now weighs almost 6 pounds (like a crenshaw melon) and is more than 18 1/2 inches long. He's shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered his body as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that covered and protected his skin during his nine-month amniotic bath. Our baby swallows both of these substances, along with other secretions, resulting in a blackish mixture, called meconium, will form the contents of his first bowel movement.

At the end of this week, our baby will be considered full-term. (Full-term is 37 to 42 weeks; babies born before 37 weeks are pre-term and those born after 42 are post-term.)

Progress

We are tipping the scale at 175lbs, and I think Dr. Hackmeyer gave up on trying to keep me in checks at this point. I guess he figured that I can't do SO much damage with only 5 weeks left. Hahahaha... Today's appointment was fairly routine- we still measure big at 37cm rather than 35, but since that's been the case all along, there isn't a cause for concern. We heard Baby Boy Klein's heartbeat and did a Group B Strep Test (vaginal and rectal culture to check for bacteria)- not fun but gotta do it.

We are really starting the final countdown now with our weekly appointments! Next week, we are going to discuss our "exit strategy". LOL. We are both scared and excited!

Baby Klein at 35 Weeks

Our baby doesn't have much room to maneuver now that he's over 18 inches long and tips the scales at 5 1/4 pounds (pick up a honeydew melon). Because it's so snug in my womb, he isn't likely to be doing somersaults anymore, but the number of times he kicks should remain about the same. His kidneys are fully developed now, and his liver can process some waste products. Most of his basic physical development is now complete — he'll spend the next few weeks putting on weight.

Baby Klein at 34 Weeks

Our baby now weighs about 4 3/4 pounds (like your average cantaloupe) and is almost 18 inches long. His fat layers — which will help regulate his body temperature once he's born — are filling him out, making him rounder. His skin is also smoother than ever. His central nervous system is maturing and his lungs are continuing to mature as well. Babies born between 34 and 37 weeks who have no other health problems generally do fine. They may need a short stay in the neonatal nursery and may have a few short-term health issues, but in the long run, they usually do as well as full-term babies.

Baby Klein at 33 Weeks

This week our baby weighs a little over 4 pounds (heft a pineapple) and has passed the 17-inch mark. He's rapidly losing that wrinkled, alien look and his skeleton is hardening. The bones in his skull aren't fused together, which allows them to move and slightly overlap, thus making it easier for him to fit through the birth canal. (The pressure on the head during birth is so intense that many babies are born with a conehead-like appearance.) These bones don't entirely fuse until early adulthood, so they can grow as his brain and other tissue expands during infancy and childhood.

This is how I feel today...

Baby Klein at 32 Weeks

By now, our baby weighs 3.75 pounds (pick up a large jicama) and is about 16.7 inches long, taking up a lot of space in my uterus. I should be gaining about a pound a week and roughly half of that goes right to our baby. In fact, he'll gain a third to half of his birth weight during the next 7 weeks as he fattens up for survival outside the womb. He now has toenails, fingernails, and real hair (or at least respectable peach fuzz). His skin is becoming soft and smooth as he plumps up in preparation for birth.
